08 14 10 Patsy Shrader Yates passed away.

It is with tears and great sadness that I write this email. Patsy passed away at 12:30 pm. today. We had been with her since 6:30 am this morning. Watching her struggle to breathe the past two weeks was very difficult for us even though we knew she was heavily sedated and was in no pain. John, Stewart, Erin and I were all with her when she passed, just as it should be. She told John and me several times that she was ready to go and that gives immeasurable comfort. No more pain or suffering with which she was so well acquainted. Life without Patsy will not be the same. She meant so much to so many of us. Thank all of you for your love for Patsy, prayers, concern, and kind email responses. Patsy's loving sister, Barbara

06 06 09 Doug Cook Update.

I just got back from spending about three hours with Doug at the Hospice House in Asheville. He really looks bad and had a rough night last night, but he knew me and we had some good conversation. I told him our classmates were thinking of him and praying for him. He said to tell everyone thanks for everything. I really don't think he's going to be with us very long. He is so very thin and his color isn't good at all. I'll keep you posted.

Love ya,

02 10 09 Doug Cook has has a bad setback.

I talked with Doug Cook today and he isn't doing well. The chemo (the one that had started shrinking the tumors) is now affecting his breathing. As you know he has breathing problems anyway. He has been in the hospital since last Friday and was discharged today. He says he has to make a decision - whether to try a different kind of chemo or take morphine and wait it out. When I asked what I could do for him- he said nothing but pray and that he would like to see me one more time. I promised I would call him back in a day or so and see when he feels like company.

Please ask the classmates to pray for him. It doesn't sound very good.

Love ya,
Jan

01 17 09 Doug Cook is having good days.

Hi

I talked with Doug yesterday and he was having a good day. He drove himself to his chemo treatment this week and, so far, was feeling pretty good. They did tell him they thought the tumors were shrinking. That's good news. He said to tell everyone to keep the cards coming. He was amazed at how many he has received and said they were so uplifting to him to know that he has so many classmates who care. By the way, his birthday is the 21st of this month.

Hope all is well with you. Stay warm.

Love ya,
Jan

06 23 08 Larry Steele has been moved to a nursing home for rehab.

Larry has been moved to a nursing home for rehab . He has been in hospital for the past two weeks. As most of you know Larry is a bad diabetic and had a stroke several years ago . Later he fell and broke his hip. The stroke and the fall have made it very difficult for him to be ambulatory through the years .

Several specialists were called in for him during his stay in the hospital . The major thing that was found was his diabetes. When he was hospitalized, his blood sugar was over 1000. Yes, that is right. It is under control again.

Larry is the first to call when he finds out someone is sick and continues to check on him or her.

He never complains about himself .

Please send him a card or a note to let him know we are praying and thinking about him.

02/12/08 Janice Williams returns.

I'm back! What a wonderful vacation. Now I need some rest. Left Miami on February 1st and sailed until February 4th, arriving in Oranjestad, Aruba. Took a tour to see this beautiful island. Left there on Feb. 5 and sailed until February 6th, arriving in Panama, through the Canal (the 8th wonder of the world.) If you ever get a chance to see this, it's truly amazing. Visited Panama City and did the tour thing there. Left on February 7th and sailed to Puerto Limon, Costa Rica (another beautiful island); left there on February 8th and sailed to George Town, Grand Cayman. Left there on the 10th and arrived back in Miami on February 11th, flew home and arrived at 6 p.m. last night. I'm too old for all this. We did see a lot of beautiful countries in Central America, partied a lot and certainly ate too much. Back to the diet today. It's good to be home.

Missed hearing from all of you. Will try to send some photos later.

Love you all,

Jan

Message from Linda:

How about this mess??? He was doing his morning exercise as usual. Poor thing. He had 9 fractures. The doctor put in 3 plates and 15 screws all on the left side of his face. He is pitiful but doing really well. At least he can move around. Thanks for getting the word out. Connie called about the mighty Mountaineers and I told her. 06/19/07 Ray Winfrey is in the Appalachian Hospital.

I talked to Ella last night and Ray is in the Appalachian Hospital. She said they have done more for him than C A M C. She said his problem stems from the shunt that was put in his arm in March. It wasn't done correctly and the blood has been blocked from his finger. The shunt must be removed and his little finger. She said he could even lose his hand or arm. She said he fell out of bed four times while in the nursing homes but wasn't injured. He is in room 319 but she said not to send flowers but maybe cards. His surgery will be one day this week and he will be in intensive care for awhile. Please tell everyone to keep them both in our prayers. Poor Ella is worn out.

04/11/07 Update, Gail Cook Wallen grandson is back home but is on chemo

Message received from Gail:

Good morning,
Hi, Chris was released from the hospital yesterday. And seems to be doing fine. But Jack and Cheryl will be taking him to Fairfax, Va. this afternoon where Chris will be giving a sperm specimen, just in case the chemo causes him to be sterile. This must be done before he starts chemo on Friday. Poor Cheryl is completely worn out so Jack told her he would take them. Woody said they could stay with him because it isn't too far from his house.Sure is nice of him. I sent out an email yesterday telling about the tumors in his lungs, but I used Cheryl's computer and wasn't able to get all the addresses. But he has 4 in his right lung and 1 in the left. The doctor tells us they are curable so we cannot lose hope.

Have a great day! Love, Gail

04/09/07 Update, Gail Cook Wallen grandson serious Kidney problem.

Message received from Gail:

Good morning,
I thought you may want an update on Chris this morning. We have gone to see him each day and he is doing as well as you can expect him to. When we visited him Saturday he got up and walked quite a bit and we were amazed. But the tube in his nose is driving him crazy and yesterday morning he threw a fit on them to take it out. So they kept him sedated all day yesterday. He hardly knew we were there. The tube cannot be removed until the doctor can hear bowel sounds. Chris doesn't care what he says or who is in the room when he says it and Saturday he said "Mamaw, the doctor said if I could fart he would take the tube out so will you pray that I can fart?" The doctor said he should have bowel sounds by today. The tube has irritated his throat and he cannot eat or drink until it is out. So let's all pray that he can pass gas today. Everyone has been so good to Cheryl, sending cards and money, she is just overwhelmed. We just found out this morning that the Mullens Methodist adult Sunday School class are giving her two hundred dollars. She doesn't know that yet. Her church has also helped quite a bit. She is now staying at The Ronald Mcdonald House in Charleston. She and Mark take turns staying with Chris at night.

We are still at Cheryl's house and will probably stay here until Chris is home. I think jack is taking his his Mom to see Chris today and I will stay with Larry. That hospital is huge and it would be too much walking for Larry.

I am using Cheryl's computer and it is different from ours, so forgive my mistakes.

Thank you!
         Love, Gail

02/23/07 Janice Williams Discription of her Hawaii Islands Sailing Trip.

This was received from Janice:

I had a whirlwind trip and am just now beginning to recuperate. I left Bristol on February 11th and flew to Honolulu where I spent the first night at the Mariott on Waikiki Beach. The net morning I boarded the "Pride of Hawaii" (a beautiful new cruise ship which holds 3000 passengers plus 1000 crew members. We sailed from Honolulu to Hilo Hawaii (the big Island) where we spent a full day viewing the beautiful sights of this Island. We left there at 6 p.m. and sailed to Kahului, which is on the Island of Maui. This took all night and we arrived on Maui at 8 a.m. We spent Wednesday and Thursday. We rented a taxi and drove all over this Island. Some of the most beautiful places in the world are on Maui. We sailed all night Thursday night and arrived in Kona, Hawaii (home of the famous Kona coffee). We spent all day Friday in Kona where we did more sightseeing, purchasing and drinking Kona coffee. We left there on Friday evening, again sailing all night and arriving in Nawiliwili on the Island of Kauai. This was more interesting sightseeing. We left Kauai at 2:00 p.m. (Hawaiian time) and arrived back in Honolulu at 7:00 a.m. on Monday morning.......catching a Delta all nighter at 5:30 p.m. for Bristol. I'm getting too old for these all nighters (the plane ride I mean.)

Some of my pictures didn't turn out well, but hope you can at least get the idea of the beauty this State has to offer.

01/19/07 John & Sherrill Robison Moves to Oklahoma & is confronted by some very harsh cold weather.

Thought we would let you know the latest adventure in our lives, as we have moved from Colorado to Oklahoma.

After we returned from the ?reunion? trip, Sherrill was diagnosed with an oxygen deficiency, and has been on oxygen during Sep & Oct. The options were that we either live here, and Sherrill stays on oxygen or we move to a lower altitude.

In early Oct we put our home on the market, and sold it in 12 days I guess the view did it, besides nobody could build behind us). So we had the movers pack everything, and put it in storage until we find a place to live. We have decided to move closer to our daughter in Abilene, KS. Have visited ?several? locations in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. We are currently on our way to NE Oklahoma to a place called Grove. Small town (14,000) situated on a fairly large lake, called Lake of the Cherokees. We will be living in our motor home until we find a place to live, If this is where we decide to stay! Who knows, we could end up almost anywhere?

It sure was hard leaving Colorado, and we know we are going to miss the area, friends, climate and the beautiful clear blue sky. But we have to do what is best for us.

Currently we are living in our motor home, in an RV park in Grove, OK. Have been looking for a house since early Nov, but have pretty much given up finding what we want/like in our price range. We have probably seen 40-50+ homes. Early Dec, we put a contract on a lot, and have decided to build. Have been talking to a couple of builders in the area, but haven?t consummated a contract with either on the house. From the back of the lot, we have a lake view, and across the street is the golf course.

1/18 - Here is our current status around the Grove area. The rural areas especially hard hit include Grove, Jay, McAlester (sp), Pryor, and surrounding communities.

It started raining Friday and the temps dropped like a rock throughout the day and night, and that turned into sleet. To compound that, it has sleeted off-and-on Saturday & Sunday. The temps haven?t risen above 30deg since Friday, and the lows have ranged from 4deg to the mid-20?s. Most of the area has been in a deep-freeze since Saturday. Everything is coated with ice, including trees (and there are LOTS of trees in this area) and power lines. The weight of the ice has snapped trees limbs, split trunks, uprooted trees, and snapped power lines. On Sunday some of the main roads were passable, and Monday they were OK. The secondary roads have ice coated trees hanging over them, and a lot of the trees have snapped, covering the roads. On Sunday, it was almost a necessity to carry a chain saw with you if you were traveling the secondary roads. The road situation has improved dramatically, but the ice and ice-covered trees/power/phone lines remain hazardous.

Some of the rural areas have been w/o water/power/phone service since Friday night, and are still out. Cell phone service has been spotty, and even had some gas lines at the gas stations when power was restored (but none now). Here at the RV Park we were w/o power for 2 days, and then it was hit-and-miss on if the power would stay on (has been pretty solid since Monday afternoon). We have been fortunate as we have stayed pretty warm, but had to run our generator for 17+ hours straight, but that?s what they are for. Monday we had an elderly couple spend the entire day with us, including diner. We then took them to their home to check it out. To their surprise power had been restored, so they went back home that evening. There is a lot of this type generosity in the area, with everybody pitching in to help. The whole situation is getting better every day. There are Electric Company employees from at least 5 states (OK, Ark, Missouri, Texas, Kansas and maybe some others) working with the local Co-Ops to restore power.

Tomorrow is the first day where temps are predicted to be above freezing (35deg) since Friday, and basically the same temps for Friday. Then some snow is coming in Sat and possibly Sun, hoping it will be light or none at all.

The RV park is a solid sheet of ice, as are a lot of other places. The ice is about 1 ½ - 2 inches thick. This is going to take some time to melt?..

We and other folks in the area are trying to dig out of this mess, and get ready for the next storm coming in on Sat.

Well folks, that?s all for now. Will try and keep you informed if the situation changes.

Had better close for now, as Sherrill has just joined me from ?sleepy-bye? time.

    Always,

01/17/07 MHS All-Classes reunion planning meeting has been set for January 24, 2007.

Mullens High Graduates:

As some of you may already know, the next date for our All-Classes reunion has been set for July 27th and 28th, 2007.  We have reserved the Armory for the event.

A planning meeting has been scheduled for January 24th at 6:00 p.m. at Morgan's in the Quality Inn (formerly the Holliday Inn).

I am notifying even those of you who I know would be unable to make it to the meeting.  This is in the hopes you will pass the information along to others to get the word out.  In the past, we did a mass mailing which was tremendously costly, a lot of work, and produced little results.  Therefore, we will not be doing the same this time.

We will send a letter to those who have responded/attended in the past.  After that, we hope to rely on each class to notify their members.  We will, most likely, put an ad in the Mullens Advocate, as that would be the most likely medium to notify classmates.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact me, Sheila or John Lucento, Wardie Lefler, Pat Repass (mongy12131), or Cheryl Payne Mills (testinlady).  One of us should be able to provide the information you would seek!

Also, please forward this to everyone you know.

Thanks!

12/13/06 Update Marianne Dishner's Condition

Just a short note to let you know Marianne is back in the hospital.  She was admitted Monday night in a state of dehydration, incoherent, and complete exhaustion.

Earlier in the week we took an overnight trip and all was reasonably OK.  We decided to get out of the house in order to break the cabin fever syndrome.  We returned Saturday afternoon and about 4:00 PM she reacted as if some one had turned off a switch.  Marianne complained of being very tired and wanted to lay down for a few minutes.  Marianne slept for the next forty eight hours.  During that forty eight hours I frequently tried to wake her to ask if she wanted either water or something to eat.  Her response was water.  She would sip one or maybe two ounces of water through a straw then go back to sleep.

Monday afternoon Marianne wanted apple strudel.  Dashed out to the local grocery store and returned with her strudel.  Sat her up on the end of the bed, she took one bite and went to sleep sitting up.  That got my attention, because she simply is not responding to stimuli.

Later that day I tried several times to wake her for at least water, because she could not continue in this state.  Monday night I decided to try one more time to wake her for either water or something to eat.  This time she did not respond at all and only made a humming noise.  This is it, I called 911 and of we went to the Emergency Ward.

Later I learned Marianne thought she was responding to me when she was making the humming noise.

Tuesday afternoon, Marianne started responding and is now able to talk very slowly and recognize visitors.  That is a good sign and the first step to the road of recovery.

Marianne and I are aware of the severity of pancreatic cancer and we will always look to the future, but we are also painfully aware of the alternative.

Earlier updates I stated we would be the one-in-five who survives and I still mean that.  Remember us in your prayers.  Must run and head to the hospital.  Thanks, Brad.

12/06/06 Nancy O'Dell Lewis, on 11/25, broke a small bone in her ankle.

The following was received from Nancy.
I twisted my ankle on 11/25 and broke the small bone. I was not supposed to walk on it per the emergency room doctor. Thank God, when I went to the orthopedic doctor today he put me in a walking boot. I can't drive in it, but was told to wear tennis shoes to drive.
I spent Thanksgiving in Death Valley with 13 others. My brother Michael works for Borax and one of his duties is as caretaker for a historic 1920 mining camp. He lives there. What a fabulous place. Anyway, we were walking around a ridge where " Spartacus " was filmed and the dirt and rocks slid out from under me and I twisted my ankle.
Some of the wooden props from the movie are still there. They also filmed some "Death Valley Days" there. Edna Halsey is going there with me on her next trip to Las Vegas. There are even some old miners graves there. I can't wait to go again, but will be more careful. My niece is coming Feb 1st from South Carolina and that is one of the places we plan to go. Also, I need to get it through my head that I'm now 68 and need to stop trying to keep up with my brothers. I'm so glad I can walk now. This last week was rough.
Hope you all have a Merry Christmas. Love, Nancy

11/29/06 Patsy Shrader Yates Recovery Update.

Patsy is very pleased with the results of her operation and is very thankful for all the calls and cards received from our Class.  Being required to keep her face parallel to the floor was not an easy task but she said, thanks for family being with her, it was hard but could have been much harder without them.  They got her a special chair and small flat TV that enabled her to look down and enjoy some entertainment.  She said that she saw so much TV that she saw programs that she had never seen.  Patsy’s can now see out of her eye, but can see a small bubble that keeps getting smaller as time goes on.
